For me, mythology had been a source of marvel and of inspiration. The cultures that had their mythology where really creative. They came up with gods, goddesses, heroes, monsters, stories, a whole world in itself. I just would like to stumble on other mythologies than Greek and Roman. Each time I did a search on mythology, I finded infos on Greek and Roman mythologies. I don't have anything against those mythologies. It is those two mythologies that made me enter the mythic world. I am at a point where I feel a good grip on Greek and Roman mythologies, I just want to expand my horizon and I feel a bit hard to do it. There is so much written on Greek and Romans myths and deities that the rest seems to be masked by it.
I am grateful for ancient Greek and Roman cultures to have brought up their worldview through their mythologies. I got a lot from it. I had characters and stories inspiration from there. The Hermaphrodite myth (marvelly told by this song from Genesis: the Fountain of Salmacis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zE3dYof_rbE) had a huge impact on me. It had inspired me. I also like the Trojan War but it haven't inspired me anything yet.
Greek and Roman mythologies had a huge impact on our civilisation: language (erotic, aphrodisiac, panic), on the technology (like all those projects from Nasa like Apollo), most of the naming of planets and moons (I know, there is a few exception). It is the two example I am thinking right now. What amuse me now that I found a bit confusing at the beginning is some mythological name that are similar: for example Theseus and Perseus. Their names are similar but their feast are different. Theseus is well known for the labyrinth and the Minotaur. Perseus is better known for slaying Medusa. Another thing that makes me smile: how accurate the ancient were in naming the planets whithout all the knowledge we had now. It was also fitting: the planet Mercury is the fastest of all the planet, Neptune is looking like an big ocean, Uranus seems made of air, Jupiter is the king of the solar system, Saturn is the Lord of the Rings but the rings seems to put limitation on that planet. What amused me the most: Mars the god, Mars the planet and in french, Mardi is the day of Mars. I love to play with Mars that way.
So, mythology is not just a bunch of stories. It show how people where creative in the past. They didn't have all the technology that we have now. Storytelling was the ancestor of the social media we now know.
